Abstract (croatian)

Novine Zora s paralelnim naslovom na engleskom jeziku (The Dawn) počele su izlaziti 16. kolovoza 1913. godine, nakon što je osnovano Hrvatsko tiskarsko društvo (Croatian Publishing Company) u Aucklandu u Novom Zelandu. Kao glavni urednik u prvom broju naveden je G. L. Scansie. Kroz novine se borio za prihvaćanje naziva Hrvat za pripadnike hrvatske nacionalnosti. Naime, većina doseljenika u Novi Zeland bila je s područja Dalmacije koja je u to vrijeme bila sastavni dio Austro-Ugarske monarhije. Zbog toga su Hrvati nazivani Austrijancima pa su za vrijeme Prvoga svjetskog rata smatrani građanima neprijateljske države. Kasnije je Zoru neko vrijeme uređivao P. Katavić (npr. tako je navedeno u god. 3, br. 35 od 4. rujna 1915.). God. 4, br. 1 od 22. siječnja 1916. uredio J. S. Petricevich, a Bartul Mihaljevich bio je urednik kratko tijekom 1915. godine. Najkasnije u god. 4 br. 3 od 13. svibnja 1916. dodaje se podnaslov The Southern Slav Bulletin, a Zora postaje glasilo Jugslavenskog odbora u Londonu. Bitno se mijenja koncept novina, od grafičkog uređenja i sadržaja do jezika. Do tada su tekstovi bili pretežno na hrvatskom jeziku, a od tada su pretežno na engleskom jeziku zbog čega brojni hrvatski čitatelji otkazuju pretplatu. Zora je izlazila do siječnja 1918. godine. Primjerke Zore posjeduje Auckland Museum Library (tiskane i na mikrofilmu), a tiskani primjerci iz ostavštine Stephena A. Jelicicha čuvaju se u arhivu Dalmatinskog kulturnog društva u Aucklandu. U Nacionalnoj i sveučilišnoj knjižnici u Zagrebu dostupno je 16 brojeva (od broja 7 u prvom godištu do broja 5 u četvrtom godištu), od čega jedan nepotpuni. Tih 16 brojeva digitalizirano je u okviru projekta Hrvatski iseljenički tisak, a u suradnji s Nacionalnom i sveučilišnom knjižnicom u rujnu 2023. godine. Abstract (english)

The first issue of Zora (with a parallel English title The Dawn) was published in Auckland, New Zealand, on August 16, 1913, after Croatian Publishing Company was established. The editor and manager was George Leon Scansie. One of the goals of the newspaper was recognizing the term Croat for people from Croatia, instead of the term Austrians (as Croatia was at that time a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire).

There were other editors of Zora – P. Katavić for vol. 3, no. 35 (September 4, 1915), J. S. Petricevich for vol. 4, no. 1(January 22, 1916) and Bartul Mihaljevich (for a short period in 1915). No later than vol. 4, no.3(May 13, 1916) the subtitle The Southern Slav Bulletin was added because Zora became the official organ of the London Yugoslav Committee. The concept of the newspaper had been changed, from the appearance to the content and language. Until May 1916 most of the texts were in Croatian, and change of that practice caused subscription cancellations. By January 1918 Zora had ceased to publish. Issues of Zora are held at the Auckland War Memorial Museum Library (printed and on microfilm). Some printed issues from the legacy of Stephen A. Jelicich are available in the archive of the Dalmatian Cultural Society in Auckland. In National and University Library in Zagreb, 16 issues are available (from no. 7, vol. 1 to no. 5, vol. 4), one of them incomplete. The16 issues were digitized as part of the Croatian Emigrant Press Project, in cooperation with the National and University Library in September 2023.
